The ascent from the Memory Wells took longer than the descent.
Each layer of the spirit realm pushed back against them as they climbed, as if resisting their return to the surface. Rowan channeled more of Luminal's power than he'd ever used before, carving a path through hostile territory while keeping Elena wrapped in protective energies.
By the time they reached the Lady of Waters' domain, he was exhausted in a way that went beyond physical fatigue.
"You need rest," Elena said as they emerged into the crystalline chamber. "Real rest, not just closing your eyes for four hours."
"I need to process what I learned first." Rowan sat heavily on a formation of solidified water, feeling the Lady's attention shift toward them. "The Primordial isn't evil. It's wounded. That changes everything."
"Does it?" Elena crouched beside him, her hand on his knee. "A wounded animal can still kill you. Understanding why it attacks doesn't make the claws less sharp."
*She speaks wisdom*, Dusk observed. *Sympathy for the Primordial's motivation does not require surrender to its methods.*
"I know. But if we can communicate with it, really communicate, maybe we can find a solution that doesn't require destroying either side."
*THE THRESHOLD CONTRACTOR RETURNS.* The Lady of Waters materialized before them, her flowing form rippling with what might have been concern. *YOU LOOK... DIMINISHED.*
"The Memory Wells took a toll."
*THEY ALWAYS DO. THE PRICE OF KNOWLEDGE IS NEVER FULLY KNOWN UNTIL IT HAS BEEN PAID.* The Lady circled them, her attention shifting between Rowan and Elena. *WHAT DID YOU LEARN?*
Rowan explained his vision: the unified existence, the flaw of consciousness, the spontaneous fracturing that created the boundary. The Lady listened without interruption, her form cycling through colors that Rowan was beginning to recognize as emotional responses.
*THIS CONFIRMS WHAT THE ELDEST AMONG US HAVE LONG SUSPECTED*, she said when he finished. *THE BOUNDARY IS NOT A PROTECTION. IT IS A WOUND THAT HAS NEVER HEALED.*
"Can it heal? Can we strengthen it in a way that lasts?"
*UNKNOWN. THE BOUNDARY HAS EXISTED FOR BILLIONS OF YOUR YEARS. NO ONE HAS EVER ATTEMPTED PERMANENT REPAIR.*
"Because no one has had the power to try. Until now."
*YOU HAVE POWER, YES. BUT POWER WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING IS MERELY DESTRUCTION WAITING TO HAPPEN.* The Lady's form solidified slightly, taking on an almost human shape. *YOU NEED MORE THAN KNOWLEDGE OF THE ORIGIN. YOU NEED KNOWLEDGE OF THE MECHANISM—HOW THE BOUNDARY MAINTAINS ITSELF, WHERE ITS WEAK POINTS ARE, WHAT FORCES COULD BE APPLIED TO STRENGTHEN RATHER THAN MERELY PATCH.*
"Where do I find that knowledge?"
*THERE IS ONE PLACE. THE THRESHOLD ARCHIVE, A REPOSITORY THAT EXISTS WITHIN THE BOUNDARY ITSELF. IT CONTAINS THE ACCUMULATED WISDOM OF EVERY BEING WHO HAS BRIDGED THE REALMS.*
"Another archive." Rowan suppressed a groan. "Another trip into dangerous territory."
*NOT A DESCENT. THE THRESHOLD ARCHIVE EXISTS... BETWEEN. YOU WOULD NEED TO ENTER THE BOUNDARY ITSELF, EXIST WITHIN THE SCAR, BECOME PART OF THE DIVISION YOU SEEK TO HEAL.*
Elena's grip on his knee tightened. "That sounds incredibly dangerous."
*IT IS. NO HUMAN HAS EVER SURVIVED PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO THE RAW BOUNDARY. THE FORCES THERE WOULD TEAR APART AN ORDINARY CONSCIOUSNESS.*
"But Rowan isn't ordinary anymore."
*NO. HE IS THE THRESHOLD CONTRACTOR. IF ANYONE COULD SURVIVE THE ARCHIVE, IT WOULD BE HIM.* The Lady paused, her form rippling. *BUT SURVIVAL IS NOT GUARANTEED. THE BOUNDARY DOES NOT WELCOME INTRUDERS. IT MIGHT REJECT HIM VIOLENTLY.*
Rowan considered the information. Another risk. Another journey into territory where death was a real possibility. But the potential reward, understanding how to truly strengthen the boundary, made it worth considering.
"How do I access it?"
*THAT, I CANNOT TELL YOU. THE ARCHIVE'S ENTRANCE CHANGES, SHIFTS, HIDES ITSELF FROM THOSE WHO WOULD MISUSE ITS KNOWLEDGE.* The Lady's attention intensified. *BUT LUMINAL MIGHT KNOW. THE THRESHOLD SPIRIT HAS CONNECTIONS TO THE BOUNDARY THAT NO OTHER BEING POSSESSES.*
Rowan turned his attention inward, seeking Luminal's consciousness within his network of contracts. The Ancient spirit was always present but rarely spoke directly. Its communication came through impressions, intuitions, the way his perception of boundaries had fundamentally changed.
*Luminal*, he called mentally. *Can you show me the way to the Threshold Archive?*
For a long moment, there was no response. Then—
*YES.*
The word resonated through every contract Rowan held, making his other spirits shiver with its power. Luminal didn't speak often, but when it did, the impact was undeniable.
*THE ARCHIVE IS ACCESSIBLE. BUT THE CONTRACTOR MUST ENTER ALONE. THE BOUNDARY WILL NOT ACCEPT COMPANIONS.*
"No," Elena said immediately. "Not alone. Not after what happened in the Memory Wells."
"The Wells were different. I wasn't entering the boundary itself, just the deep spirit realm." Rowan stood, facing her. "If Luminal says I have to go alone, I have to go alone."
"And if something happens to you in there?"
"Then you'll know. Through the ring." He touched her hand, feeling the warmth of the connection that bound them. "If I start to lose myself, you'll feel it. You can... you can prepare."
"Prepare for what? Life without you?" Elena's voice cracked. "That's not preparation. That's grief in advance."
*The woman loves deeply*, Dusk observed. *Perhaps too deeply for her own safety.*
"There's no such thing as loving too deeply," Rowan said aloud, responding to both the spirit and Elena's unspoken fear. "But there is such a thing as letting love prevent necessary action."
Elena's jaw tightened. She wanted to argue. He could see it in every line of her body. But she understood the stakes. The Primordial was coming. The boundary was weakening. And Rowan was the only one who could learn what they needed to know.
"When?" she asked finally.
"Soon. Today, if possible." Rowan looked at the Lady of Waters. "We need to move quickly. Every hour we wait is an hour the boundary weakens further."
*AGREED.* The Lady's form shifted, creating a clear space in the center of her domain. *LUMINAL WILL GUIDE YOU TO THE ARCHIVE'S ENTRANCE. I WILL WATCH OVER YOUR HUMAN WHILE YOU ARE GONE.*
"Her name is Elena."
*I KNOW HER NAME. I SIMPLY CHOOSE TO DESCRIBE HER BY HER MOST RELEVANT CHARACTERISTIC.* Something like amusement flickered through the Lady's form. *SHE IS YOUR ANCHOR, IS SHE NOT? THE HUMAN WHO KEEPS YOU GROUNDED IN HUMANITY DESPITE YOUR TRANSFORMATION?*
"She is."
*THEN I WILL GUARD HER CAREFULLY. A THRESHOLD CONTRACTOR WITHOUT AN ANCHOR IS... UNPREDICTABLE.*
Rowan turned to Elena, taking her hands in his. "I'll come back."
"You'd better."
"I mean it. Whatever's in that Archive, whatever knowledge it contains, none of it matters if I lose you in the process."
Elena kissed him, fierce and desperate, tasting like fear and love and the refusal to let either win. When she pulled back, her eyes were bright with unshed tears.
"Go," she said. "Learn what you need to learn. And come back to me."
Rowan nodded. He turned toward the center of the chamber, where Luminal's power was already building, creating a pathway to the boundary itself.
The Threshold Archive waited.
*Soul Remaining: 13%*
*Next Destination: The Threshold Archive*
*Status: Entering the boundary alone*
*Cost: Unknown*
*The knowledge exists. Now comes the price of obtaining it.*
