He sat still.

Her specialization in the certification record is listed as "experimental class mechanics."* He paused. *If she's reading Illen's research and applying it to class assessmentβ*
*She's identifying classes that shouldn't be identifiable yet.* He looked at the window. *Cruz's class. Illen theorized a class family based on force-fracture mechanics in that paper. How would someone develop that class.*
ROWAN: *In Illen's theoretical framework, the Fracture Technique class requires a specific interaction between the awakener's channel architecture and high-resistance physical training under controlled loading conditions.* A pause. *He described a training methodology in the paper. It's specific enough to follow if you know it exists.*
*Cruz followed the methodology.*
ROWAN: *That's my reading, yes.* Another pause. *The question is where Cruz found the paper. Illen's publication record is in the Association's research archive β the same archive Marcus pulled documents from. But the paper predates the current archive system and is in the older catalogue.* He paused. *Kael. Marcus was in that archive. The access code he used would have shown him the full catalogue.*
He thought about Marcus pulling the full relevant archive set. Understanding the research question and pulling everything it required.
Marcus hadn't pulled Illen's paper. He'd pulled the Fenner program documentation. But he'd been in the same archive.
*Marcus didn't pull the paper. But who else has archive access that would reach the older catalogue.*
ROWAN: *Faculty researchers. Registered assessment practitioners with extended access.* He paused. *Maren Voss, as a certified assessment practitioner, would have had archive access three months ago, when she was certified.*
*She found the paper herself.*
ROWAN: *That's my conclusion.* A pause. *If she found Illen's paper and applied the training methodology to a student before certifying Cruz β we're looking at a class that exists because of adjacent activity in the archive research space. Not directly because of anything you did. But within the same network of effects.*
He stood up from the desk and walked to the window.
Three months. Cruz had been D-rank for four months, which meant the class development started before that. Eight to nine months ago. Which was before the archive access, before the ethics investigation, before most of the threading he'd done.
*The paper was published seven years ago,* he sent. *Maren Voss could have found it through independent research.*

Whatever had created Tavin Cruz's development path β Illen's paper finding a new reader, Maren Voss developing assessment capability for non-standard classes, the training methodology being followed by a specific person at a specific time β it was a generative effect. Not something Kael had prevented or caused directly. Something that had grown in the spaces between his interventions.

In a thirty-one-person single-elimination bracket, the seeding determined early matchups. If Cruz was underseeded as D-rank β classified below his actual capability β he'd be placed in positions that gave him favorable early matchups. He'd advance through rounds that shouldn't be easy, advancing until he hit the seeded C-rank hunters.
By that point, the tournament structure would have him at full expression. Anyone facing him at that stage would be fighting a D-rank fighter performing at C-rank capability with a technique set nobody had seen in actual combat before.

He thought about this.

Not all of it β the Illen paper, the Maren Voss connection, the archive access chain. He told her the relevant piece: there was a D-rank participant in the tournament whose class mechanics were unusual and not well-documented, and preparation for the fight would require theoretical analysis rather than footage review.
She looked at him.
"Unusual how," she said.
"The class mechanism operates through fracture-force generation in the impact chain rather than standard impact-transfer. The technique set produces a different load profile than anything in the Association's current combat database."
She was quiet for a moment. "How do you know this."
"A practitioner who understands the class mechanism certified the participant." He looked at her. "I have access to the theoretical framework the mechanism is built on."
"Through channels I don't need to ask about."
"Through research documentation." He met her eyes. "The theoretical framework is from a published paper."
Castellan sat with this. Not skepticism β the actual processing of new information by someone who took new information seriously.
"The impact chain variation," she said slowly. "If the force is fracture-propagated rather than transferred β the receiver's defenses work against transferred impact, not propagated fracture."
"Yes."
"Standard blocking postures are optimized for transfer." She picked up her tablet. "The structural assumption in defensive training is that you're redirecting force, not containing propagation." She looked up. "What's the defense."
"The paper describes it. The defense against fracture-propagation is channel architecture that creates interference at the propagation points β essentially, you absorb the fracture at the channel level before it reaches structural tissue." He paused. "Which requires D-rank or above channel density. Below that, the propagation carries through before the channel architecture can respond."
"Can you do the channel-level interference."
"At current architecture, at full effort, possibly. At the C-rank architecture I'll have in four weeks β yes, reliably." He looked at his hands. "If I fight Cruz before the C-rank threshold, the defense is marginal."
She looked at the bracket structure he'd handed her. "Where is the likely matchup in the bracket."
"Round three or four."
"Which isβ" She calculated. "Week two of the tournament, depending on the scheduling format."
"Yes."
She looked at the circuit work chart he'd also handed her. "You need the C-rank threshold before round three or four."
"In three weeks instead of four." He met her eyes. "Is it possible on the standard methodology."
She was quiet for a long time.
"The stability drills I added," she said finally. "The slow build was to ensure clean architecture. If I run the drill intensity at a higher rate β not shortcuts, not exploits, just more volume of the correct work β the density building accelerates within the clean threshold." She paused. "It's harder. The sessions would need to run longer. Your recovery window would compress."
"What's the risk."
"The wound site," she said. "The left cluster is nearly fully integrated but it's still slightly compressed. High-volume intensity over three weeks puts load on a structure that's still completing its healing integration." She met his gaze. "If the wound site shows strain response, we pull back. That's not optional."
"Agreed."
"If you fight Cruz at D-rank capabilityβ"
"That's also not optimal."
She almost smiled. "Then we start tomorrow. The session load doubles until the tournament week." She wrote something on her tablet. "And you eat enough to support the additional metabolic load. I'll give you a nutrient protocol. You'll follow it."
"I'll follow it."
"You say that."
"Castellan." He looked at her. "I'll follow it."
She wrote it down. "All right." She closed the tablet. "The field beyond Cruz. What's the read on Dorian Vex."
He looked at the bracket structure.
"A real fight," he said. "Not an easy one."
"But a winnable one."
"With the C-rank threshold β yes."
"Then we're working toward two objectives." She stood. "Session starts at 0700 tomorrow. Don't be late."
